This week, a woman was murdered in Bloomington. I did not know her, but my heart goes out to her family, her friends, her neighbors. I am so deeply saddened that her life was cut short. I pray that she knew Jesus.
This week, a woman was arrested for murder in Bloomington. Her mug shot was shown on every channel, along with a bit of her story- well, let’s be honest, it was only the worst bit of her story, the bit that allows us to generalize her, categorize her, diminish her to a set of behaviors and consequences. But here’s the thing: I know Donna Mae Bastyr.
Our Breakthrough team met Donna over a year ago, stressed and scared, outside the Salvation Army Shelter. We helped her get into treatment. We drove her to court appearances. Shared meals with her. She had burned a lot of bridges. Addiction does that. We spoke life into her as best as we knew how. We talked about next steps, dreams, God’s purpose for her life. We encouraged her to lean on Him and keep moving forward.
Every so often, Donna would reach out to one of us. She’d send pictures of her with her son and express her gratitude for the support of family members. She was happy to have completed a treatment program. She was saddened at the loss of a job. It seemed that her life had smoothed out into a routine that was working for her.
This tragic turn has shocked us, but it does not change our resolve. Even if this is the only post like it on the entire internet, I want this to be stated publicly- for her son, for her family and for Donna- that she is loved. That she is a precious, beautiful daughter of the Living God. That there is NOWHERE she can go from His presence. That this isn’t the end of her story.
And pray also that God’s revelation would be released through me every time I preach the wonderful mystery of the hope-filled gospel. Yes, pray that I may preach the wonderful news of God’s kingdom with bold freedom at every opportunity. – Ephesians 6:19-20 TPT
We learned last night that our sweet sister, Denise Washington- who serves every week as the coordinator of our Needs Closet- is a powerhouse preacher!
Denise brought us understanding about who God is. She pointed out that we need to know who God is so that we can understand who we are. So true!

– I take what Jesus gives me & I give it out
– I go to the devil and take back what he stole from me. I take back what he stole from you and give it back to you.
- BREAKTHROUGH – A term of warfare: an offensive military assault that penetrates and carries beyond a defensive line. An act or instance of moving thru or beyond an obstacle. A sudden advance in knowledge or technique.
Last night’s message from Wild Hearts Adventures founder, Paul Lanhart, dealt with the question, “Who Am I?” We often define ourselves by what we do for a living, what we do well or what others say about us. If a situation comes along that contradicts that definition, it can throw our lives into a tailspin.
A much better question: “Who does God say I am?” The answer is the same in every circumstance:
And God made man in His own likeness. – Genesis 1:27
Every single moment you are thinking of me! How precious and wonderful to consider that you cherish me constantly in your every thought! – Psalm 139:17-18
My plan for your future has always been filled with hope. – Jeremiah 29:11
For you are my treasured possession. – Exodus 19:5
Through our union with Christ we too have been claimed by God as his own inheritance. Before we were even born, he gave us our destiny; that we would fulfill the plan of God who always accomplishes every purpose and plan in his heart. – Ephesians 1:11
Let’s have renewed minds that believe what God says!
41 But he raises up the poor and lowly with his favor,
giving them a safe place to live where no one can touch them.
God will grant them a large family and bless them!
42 The lovers of God will rejoice when they see this.
Psalm 107:41-42a TPT
Anyone want to see “on earth as it is in heaven?” WE DO! Each week at Breakthrough Minneapolis, we get to catch a glimpse.
We see wonders and miracles, encouraging prophetic words, hearts moved by the reality of poverty, and hearts moved by the love of Christ. We see a team modeling the type of service that Jesus showed his disciples, and volunteers eager to serve, to make a difference.
When people look at this world and see what’s wrong, we can’t help but encourage them to come to Breakthrough. There’s just nothing more beautiful than people interacting in the love and kindness of Christ.
“I tell you this timeless truth: The person who follows me in faith, believing in me, will do the same mighty miracles that I do—even greater miracles than these because I go to be with my Father! For I will do whatever you ask me to do when you ask me in my name. And that is how the Son will show what the Father is really like and bring glory to him. Ask me anything in my name, and I will do it for you!”
“Loving me empowers you to obey my commands. And I will ask the Father and he will give you another Savior, the Holy Spirit of Truth, who will be to you a friend just like me—and he will never leave you.” -John 14:12-17
We serve the homeless because Jesus said
“I have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect—life in its fullness until you overflow!“
John 10:10b TPT
Ever been troubled by how Jesus’ disciples were treated once he returned to heaven? Beaten, arrested, accused, tortured, killed. Jesus warned them! But imagine what they had experienced with him to make them take the risks they took. Imagine what it was like to have a front row seat when heaven came to earth. You’d want to tell people!
“And because you follow me, they will take you to stand trial in front of rulers and even kings as an opportunity to testify of me before them and the unbelievers.” -Matthew 10:18 TPT
In EVERY circumstance, may we be faithful to testify to the goodness of God!
“For this is how much God loved the world—he gave his one and only, unique Son as a gift. So now everyone who believes in him will never perish but experience everlasting life.”
